CRT Improve Your Vision While You Sleep

By Jeffrey Schultz on June 19, 2013

NewsChannel5's Alicia Booth reported that a new therapy to fix vision was approved by the Food and Drug Administration a few months ago. Retired teacher Judy Relick, of Twinsburg, does something most people don't -- she wears her contact lenses at night instead of during the day. The lenses correct her vision while she sleeps. "I was a little skeptical when he suggested it," she said. "I said, 'Could I have a day to think about it?'" Since she trusted her eye doctor of more than 20 years, Relick didn't need more than a day to decide to try it. The plan is called corneal refractive therapy, or CRT. The lenses flatten a person's corneas while he or she sleeps, which improves vision much like the way LASIK surgery does. "It is something that is now starting to come into vogue more because of the new contact lens material," Dr. Jeffrey Schultz said. Schultz said the lenses breathe much better now, and that's important because comfort is always a big issue for patients."And I did think I was going to think to myself all night, 'Oh, I have contacts in my eyes,' but I didn't have any trouble sleeping with them and I hardly know they're there."

Big Improvements In Vision

Schultz's patients usually notice a big improvement in their vision in about a week. The whole package deal, which includes about a year's worth of the lenses, costs about $1,500. A patient can't get them just anywhere. Although there are about 600 doctors in the country who prescribe them, there are only a few offices in the Cleveland area that offer the CRT plan. The company that makes the lenses is called Paragon Vision Services. Doctors said the correction is only temporary and lasts as long as a person continues to wear the lenses at night.
