A leading cause of blindness in patients over the age of 50 is age-related macular degeneration (or AMD). This condition actually affects about 20 percent of patients over the age of 65. This is a serious condition, but, fortunately, there is treatment available. The problem is that many patients are not aware that they have the condition. That is why Cleveland optometrist Jeffrey E. Schultz routinely tests for macular degeneration using the Foresee PHP system. With early detection, macular degeneration can be treated before it leads to blindness.
What Is AMD?
Macular degeneration is a disease that destroys the cells in the part of your eye known as the macula. The macula is the part of your eye that helps you see fine details. Over time, this condition can destroy your vision and lead to blindness. There are actually two forms of age-related macular degeneration.
- Dry AMD:Dry AMD is a less severe form of the condition. Many patients will not realize they have dry AMD because it progresses so slowly. In most cases, dry AMD will not cause serious loss of vision. However, in some cases, dry AMD will advance to the more serious condition, wet AMD.
- Wet AMD:Wet AMD is the more serious type of macular degeneration. In patients with wet AMD, blood vessels beneath the retina grow out of control and can cause fluid leakage. This fluid causes damage that leads to rapid vision loss and, in some cases, blindness.
In patients who suffer from either “dry” or “wet” AMD, the key to treatment is early detection.
Age-related macular degeneration sometimes progresses so slowly that a patient may not even notice symptoms. In other cases, the disease may progress so quickly that by the time a patient realizes there is a problem, they have already experienced vision loss. That is why early detection is so important. Dr. Schultz believes that, for his patients in Cleveland, eye care should involve routine testing for macular degeneration. Dr. Schultz uses Foresee PHP to detect macular degeneration in its earliest stages. Foresee PHP can detect and monitor age-related macular degeneration before it causes serious damage to a patient’s vision.
There are many treatments available for AMD. Treatments available may include medication, injections, laser treatment, or surgery. The best treatment will be unique for each patient and will depend on how far the macular degeneration has progressed. If Foresee PHP detects AMD, Dr. Schultz will discuss the severity of your condition and go over viable treatment options. Some treatments can be conducted here at Lifetime Eye Care, while more invasive treatments will need to be performed by a specialist. If this is the case, Dr. Schultz can refer you to a trusted specialist in the area.
